"I am just starting out. What is snap setting and what tools do you use to set a gem in it? Also would my daughters rock tumbler be good enough to use for tumbling gold and silver pieces?"
A snap setting is a finding that you can easily place a faceted gemstone in WITHOUT messing with the prongs. Most of the time all you need to do is place the gemstone on its back (pointed side up and push the setting down onto it. You should hear a snap sound- and there you have it!
As far as the tumbler, yes you can use her tumbler- but CLEAN it out first. Fill with one pound of mixed STAINLESS steel shot, a small squirt of Dawn, a few sterling, copper or gold filled pieces, enough water to cover and run for about 20 minutes. Best NOT to use on pearls, crystals or VERY soft stones, though.
