Trimming Around a Bezel

by Judy Larson
It is best to use a saw to cut away excess backplate around a bezel but not everyone feels comfortable doing this. A good pair of metals shears will work well if care is taken in use.
Instructions
Because of their narrow jaws, I found that only French shears and Lindstrom shears would work for me to cut around bezels. The jaws of the regular shears on the right may not seem much thicker, but it makes a huge difference cutting close to a bezel. I chose Lindstrom shears because the thick handle grip is easier on my hands.

Trimming around a bezel is not like peeling an apple, trying for one long coil. Trying to do this will result in the bezel and backplate bending out of shape. It is best to trim little bits at a time, being careful to leave the amount of edge desired. If no edge is desired, do not cut right up to the bezel. It is too easy to inadvertently cut some of the thin bezel wall away. Leave a scant edge to file down.
