Question:

Dale, you talked out adding PVC pipes to the legs of your tables to raise the table height. How do we know how wide and long of PVC pipe to buy?

-Leslie in La Selva Beach, California

Answer:

You’re right, Leslie, I did a video tip on how to make your display stand out at a show, which is available here: Raising Table Legs For Your Next Show.

To find the length of pipe you’ll need, measure the distance from the bend or support bar in the table leg to the floor and add whatever distance you wish to add to the table height. This is the necessary length of PVC pipe you need.

Now measure the distance across the center width of the leg’s foot and add a half-inch. This is how wide you need the pipe to be. Take the measurements to the store and ask them to help find the pipe you need. Most of us either cut the pipe ourselves, or have it cut at the place of purchase.

Another way to raise tables is to use bed risers, available at many department stores. They work great for straight legged tables.

    Hello Dale:
I loved your idea for the PVC pipe but added a little something to it. I made the back legs (or front whichever way you set up your booth) 2 inches higher. That way when they look at it not only are the pieces higher but easier to see – more like having them on a manequin. Thanks for all the good answers you give us.

As my table covers are not down to the floor, I also spray painted my pvc extender the same color as the table legs. It looks awesome.

I’m on my way to the hardware store right now! I also wanted to pass on something I learned from another jewelry maker…I bought some knit fabric, enough yardage to go completely around the table, and stitched it together to form a long, wide loop. Then, when I’m setting up, all I have to do is stretch it around the legs of the table to cover the legs (like putting on a skirt). Then I have complementary tablecloths that I cover the tops with, hanging over about a foot on each side. Solves the dilemma of finding something long enough to cover the top and the legs.
